Travel map animation maker, down to the street

Travellar turns your photos, a Google Maps route or a GPX file into an animated map video. It follows your route stop by stop, with your photos and place names along the way.

How it works

Your trip β†’ animated map

Start from whatever you already have. Travellar works out the map.

Street level

Made for walks, day trips and road trips

Most trips happen inside one city or along one road. The animation zooms in to show them, where a world map would show a single dot.

Guide

How to make a travel map animation

From the first photo to the finished video, with every setting you can change along the way.

Start from what you already have

A map animation needs a route, and you probably have one already. Travellar reads it from any of these:

Before you import, the import settings let you choose how your photos become stops. Merge nearby places groups the ones taken close together into one stop, by place, city or country, and Sort by date, Snap to roads and Merge repeated visits tidy the rest.

Tidy the route

Check the stops before you style anything. Rename a place, drag it to a new position, delete the ones that don't belong, or search for a place the import missed.

Each stretch between two stops has its own travel mode. Walking, cycling and driving follow the roads, and a curve draws a plain line where there is no road to follow.

If the line takes a turn you didn't, add a snap point. It pulls the route through that spot without showing as a stop in the video.

Pick the map and the camera

The map style sets the mood more than any other choice. There are clean maps, a vintage look, glowing neon, an architect's blueprint, a hiking map with contours and trails, an 8-bit game world and satellite imagery, all with 3D buildings except satellite. Each can be shown at dawn, by day, at dusk or at night, in the fog or without labels. Standard is free by day, and Premium unlocks every style at any time of day, and the fog.

Then decide how you look at it. Switch between a flat 2D map and a tilted 3D view, and set the zoom to show more of the surroundings or to get closer to the streets.

Camera movement changes how the trip feels. Bird follows the route from above, Chase turns with it as if riding behind, and Static holds still while the line draws itself. Pitch and bearing set the angle and the direction the camera faces.

Style the route and the stops

Give the route line a colour from a wide palette, then set its thickness and its outline so it stands out on the map you chose.

Place labels name each stop as the route reaches it, in the size you pick. Spots mark the stops on the map as a halo, a circle or a ring. They can appear as each place is visited or stay on the map from the start, in their own size and colour.

The title shows the name of your trip and where it happened. Turn it off if the animation is going into a bigger edit.

Show photos and videos at every stop

When the route reaches a stop, its photos and videos come up. Gallery shows them full screen, filling the frame or fitted inside it. Polaroid lays them over the map as a stack of prints. Either way, the place name can sit under them as a caption.

Videos play inside the animation with their own sound. Mute them if you'd rather hear only the music, or lower the music while a video plays. On a browser that can't play videos in the export, a video shows as a still.

Set the timing

The length is yours to decide. Set how long the intro and the outro last, how long each place label and each photo stay on screen, and one travel speed for the whole route.

For finer control, give every stretch its own travel time, right under its transport in the list of stops. Linger on the walk through the old town and hurry along the motorway.

The preview shows the length of the video and the size of the file as you change things, so you can aim for the length you need.

Add music, or embrace silence

Travellar includes tracks you can preview before you pick one. Choose None and the video exports silent, which is what you want if you plan to add a sound or a voiceover somewhere else.

With Premium, Your music puts a song from your own files on the Reel instead: on iPhone it comes from the Files app. The Reel plays its first two minutes from the start, on a loop if the Reel is longer, and the song stays on your device.

Choose the format and download

Pick vertical for Reels, TikTok and Shorts, square for feed posts or horizontal for YouTube and websites. Then choose the resolution, the frame rate and the quality. Premium unlocks the higher settings and removes the watermark and the end animation.

Download gives you an MP4. On the web it saves to your device, and in the iOS app it opens the share sheet. The video is made on your device, so keep Travellar open until it finishes.

FAQ

Map animation questions

What is a travel map animation?

A short video that draws your route on a map, moving from one stop to the next. Travellar adds your photos, videos and place names as the route reaches each stop.

How do I make a travel map animation video?

Import your photos, a Google Maps route link or a GPX file into Travellar, pick a map style and music, and download the video.

Can it show a short trip, like a walk around a city?

Yes. The map zooms in to fit your route, so a walk between a few streets shows as clearly as a drive between cities.

Do I need to know video editing?

No. Travellar builds the animation from your route and photos. You choose the look and download it.

Can I make a 3D map animation?

Yes. Switch between a flat 2D map and a tilted 3D view, set the pitch and the bearing, and choose whether the camera follows the route from above, turns with it or holds still.

Can I add videos as well as photos?

Yes. Videos play at their stop alongside your photos, with their own sound or muted.

Can I change how long each stop shows?

Yes. Set how long each place label and each photo stay on screen, the travel time of every stretch of the route, and the intro and the outro. The preview shows the length as you go.

Is Travellar free?

Yes. You can create and download Reels for free, with a Travellar watermark. Premium removes the watermark and the end animation, unlocks every map style, your own music, smoother motion and higher resolutions on desktop, and starts with a free trial.

Got a trip to show?

Import it and see every stop on the map.
